The Pi Gamma Mu Thesis and Dissertation Grant

The Pi Gamma Mu International Honor Society in Social Sciences – University of the Philippines  (Philippine Alpha Chapter) Thesis and Dissertation Grant (PGM-TDG) offers financial support for eligible students who are completing their undergraduate or graduate thesis/dissertation. The   PGM-TDG will be awarded on a competitive-basis, upon screening of PGM-TDG applications  from qualified undergraduate and graduate student applicants. The PGM-TDG will be awarded  to a maximum of one undergraduate student applicant (PhP 10,000), one MA candidate applicant (PhP 30,000), and one PhD candidate applicant (PhP 50,000) each year.  

A. Eligibility of Applicants

To be eligible for the grant, an undergraduate or graduate student applicant should: 

1. Preferably be an active member of the Pi Gamma Mu International Honor Society in  Social Sciences – University of the Philippines (Philippine Alpha Chapter);

2. Be completing her/his thesis/dissertation as a requirement for an undergraduate or  graduate social science degree program in the University of the Philippines;

3. Have defended her/his thesis/dissertation proposal, as certified by the Unit Head/Dean.  In cases when undergraduate thesis proposal defense is not a unit requirement, the Unit  Head/Dean has (a) to certify that the thesis proposal passes the Unit’s standard for  undergraduate thesis proposal and (b) to endorse the thesis proposal for  implementation.  

B. Application Requirements  

Undergraduate and graduate student applicants should submit the following documents: 

1. Accomplished PGM-TDG application form (PGM-TDG Form A); 

2. Endorsement from the Thesis/Dissertation Adviser (PGM-TDG Form B);

3. Endorsement from the Unit Head/Dean that the thesis/dissertation proposal has passed  the thesis/dissertation proposal defense and has been approved for implementation. In cases when an undergraduate thesis proposal defense is not a unit requirement, the  Unit Head/Dean (a) has to certify that the thesis proposal passes the Unit’s standard for  undergraduate thesis proposal and (b) has to endorse the thesis proposal for  implementation; and 

4. A bound and digital copy of the approved thesis/dissertation proposal which, at the  minimum, should contain the following sections:
(a) Statement of the problem,
(b)  Literature review and study framework,
(c) Research method/s and procedure,
(d)  References.

Complete requirements must be received by the Pi Gamma Mu Office on or before the  scheduled deadline to qualify for review (refer to the section on General Schedule of the PGM TDG Cycle). Submitted documents will not be returned to the applicant.

C. General Schedule of the PGM-TDG Cycle (2022-2026)

The society has granted distinguished service awards to members who, until now, continue to uphold the vision of Pi Gamma Mu through their outstanding work and achievements. Among the illustrious members of the alpha chapter are two presidents of the Republic, several Supreme Court Justices, and a number of Cabinet Members. Within the University of the Philippines administration, the Pi Gamma Mu counts as members six university Presidents, several Vice-Chancellors, and countless deans.

D. Review Process

  1. The Pi Gamma Mu Office will check if all the required documents have been submitted.  Complete submissions will be forwarded to the Chair of the PGM-TDG Review  Committee.
  2. The PGM-TDG Review Committee Chair will identify potential panel members to help  her/him evaluate the submitted thesis/dissertation proposals.
  3. The PGM-TDG Review Committee Chair and panel members will review all complete  PGM-TDG grant applications.
  4. The PGM-TDG Review Committee Chair will submit a committee report to the Pi Gamma  Mu Board of Directors containing the PGM-TDG Review Committee’s list of endorsed  PGM-TDG grant applications for the year (a maximum of one each for undergraduate  thesis, MA thesis, and PhD dissertation grant).
  5. The Pi Gamma Mu Board of Directors will approve the endorsed PGM-TDG grant  applications for the year.
  6. The Pi Gamma Mu Office will inform all applicants about the result of their PGM-TDG  application.

E. Terms and Conditions of the PGM-TDG

  1. The PGM-TDG will be disbursed as follows: 
    a. The initial fifty percent (50%) of the approved grant shall be released upon the  Grantee’s acceptance of PGM-TDG Terms and Conditions 
    b. The remaining fifty percent (50%) of the approved grant shall be released upon  submission of (1) abound copy and (2) a digital copy of the final  
    thesis/dissertation manuscript to Pi Gamma Mu. 
  2. The grant is for a one-year period and Grantees are expected to complete their  thesis/dissertation within one year upon receiving the PGM-TDG. Grantees are required  to submit a hard and digital copy of the final thesis/dissertation manuscript to Pi Gamma  Mu within one (1) month after the end of the grant period.
  3. A Grantee may be given a maximum of one-year extension (maximum of 12 months) only  in exceptional cases. The Grantee is required to submit a hard and digital copy of the  final thesis/dissertation manuscript to Pi Gamma Mu within one (1) month after the end  of the extension period. To request for an extension, the Grantee must: 

    a. Submit a letter of request for an extension: The letter must state the reason for  extension, specify the progress made, present the updated work calendar, and  the expected month of completion within the requested extension period.
    b. Endorsement from the Thesis/Dissertation Adviser and the Unit Head/Dean. 
  4. Grantees who fail to submit a hard and digital copy of the final thesis/dissertation  manuscript to Pi Gamma Mu at the end of the one-year grant period or at the end of the  approved extension period are required to return the initial 50% of the approved grant  within three (3) months after the end of the grant or extension period. 
  5. Pi Gamma Mu should be given due acknowledgement in the final copy of the  thesis/dissertation: 

    The author acknowledges the Pi Gamma Mu International Honor Society in Social  Sciences – University of the Philippines
    (Philippine Alpha Chapter) for funding support  through the Pi Gamma Mu Thesis and Dissertation Grant.

  6. The Grantee may be requested to present her/his thesis/dissertation at a Pi Gamma Mu  conference or forum. 
  7. Pi Gamma Mu reserves the right to terminate the grant at anytime for any violation of  the norms of social science research. 
  8. Pi Gamma Mu is not liable legally, financially or otherwise for any untoward/unfavorable  circumstances that the Grantee may experience during the implementation of the work  plan and enjoyment of the grant.
